Sulphur Dioxide (So2)

 Following are the  general properties, natural and man-made sources of sulphur dioxide along with their harmful effects on human organ systems;

Properties; Sulur dioxide is an invisible gas and has a disgusting, sharp smell. It can react with other substances present in the air to form harmful compounds, and dioxide is mixed with water vapors present in the air. most of the sulfur dioxide comes into the air from human activities.

Sources; There are two types of sources for the emission of sulphur dioxide gas;

Natural Source; It is produced through the burning of coal and petroleum products

From human Activities; Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is emitted from fossil fuel combustion in ships and other locomotive equipment, etc. The oxidation of sulphur dioxide also forms sulphuric acid (H2SO4). The presence of sulphuric acid in the air is threatening.

Harmful Effects; sulphur dioxide has harmful effects on the following human organ systems;

Headache; inhalation of sulphur dioxide gas causes severe headaches with irritation of the eyes.

Breathing; It causes irritation in the nose, throat, and air passage that leads to coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath, and tightness n the chest. It causes acute and chronic asthma. Cilia are affected when air containing sulphur dioxide is inhaled.

Lungs; Sulphur dioxide severely damages the lungs and may cause lung cancer, Chronic bronchitis, and sulphur dioxides affect the lungs.

Brain; Long-term exposure to this gas may also disturb the development of the brain and reduces intelligence in humans.
